It is important to remember that eating is about hunger. Hunger is a normal, natural and healthy signal that your body needs fuel. Just as you drink when you are thirsty, or go to the bathroom when you need to, you must honor your body's hunger cues and eat when you are hungry – without judgment! Eating is also about being emotionally satisfied by what we put in our mouths. We should enjoy our food. It should provide us with a steady flow of energy. We should not feel restricted or deprived or obsessive about the food we eat.

Think about it! You were born perfectly self-regulating. You ate when you were hungry (pleasant hunger not "eat-the-refrigerator" hunger), stopped when you were comfortable (not "Thanksgiving dinner stuffed") and ate what you really wanted to eat. You came away feeling physically and emotionally satisfied. This is called intuitive or internally-directed eating. This is what eating is supposed to be like. This is the way people who have a healthy relationship to food eat (most of the time). This is how you must re-learn how to eat if you want to permanently integrate healthy eating and a healthy weight into your life.

The cornerstone of long-term healthy eating and healthy weight management is getting connected to what and when your body needs fuel and what your mind will find satisfying. As your dietitian, I partner with you to integrate a healthy, internally directed eating pattern into your daily life. I weave in basic nutrition information, and behavior change strategies with the concrete, practical business of shopping, cooking and eating. Together, we uncover the forces in your life that trigger your eating problems and block you from your goals.

Each of us has the capacity to achieve our food and health goals. Make the commitment to yourself!
